Ethereal Series
The Ethereal Series builds upon the foundation laid in the previous Collage Series, where abstract graphic images were combined with poured elements, uniform lines, and a stabilizing solid bar. In the Collage Series, a structured process emerged: a fluid poured element initiated the composition, followed by graphic responses to the pour, uniform lines as a bridge between the two, and finally, a solid one-inch color bar that grounded the composition, extending along three-quarters of the 16x20 canvas.
In contrast, the Ethereal Series seeks to break away from the rigidity and predictability of those graphic forms, embracing a more painterly and emotionally resonant approach. These non-representational paintings introduce fluidity and spontaneity, softening the structure of the previous works. The process begins with a solid, sprayed background on a 20x24 white paper board, providing a foundation for the dynamic layers that follow. A more fluid, risk-taking poured image defines the second layer, lending a sense of immediacy and unpredictability. The surrounding space is then filled with flowing, wave-like lines that extend to the borders, further enhancing the sense of movement and energy.
In place of the solid bar from the Collage Series, a dark, wavy brushstroke takes its place, more gestural and emotionally charged. This brushstroke becomes a central, expressive element, adding depth and a sense of spiritual resonance to the composition. The color palette, with its rich and complementary hues, evokes a spiritual or ethereal quality, inviting deeper emotional interpretation.
This series strikes a balance between structure and freedom. While I find comfort in the familiar formula that provides a sense of control and predictability, the pouring and splash-like brushstrokes inject risk and vulnerability, leading to a more evocative, emotional outcome. The Ethereal Series has resonated with many viewers, who have described it as both visually captivating and emotionally engaging.
